Zane Truesdale

Zane Truesdale, known in Japan as Ryo Marufuji (丸藤亮, Marufuji Ryō?), is a fictional character in the anime series Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX in Japan) and the manga series of the same name.

Character
17-year old Zane Truesdale is the stronger older brother of Syrus Truesdale (Sho Marufuji) who stays in the Obelisk Blue dormitory at Duel Academy (Duel Academia) along with Alexis Rhodes (Asuka Tenjouin) and Chazz Princeton (Jun Manjoume). Zane is highly respected, and a duel with him is reserved only for the elite. He is also close friends with Alexis and her brother, Atticus Rhodes (Fubuki Tenjouin). In the original version of the series, he is nicknamed "Kaiser Ryo" (カイザー亮 Kaizā Ryō).
Personality-wise, Zane is calm and collected, with a deep respect for his opponents and his own cards. He feels that the connection between a duelist and his opponent, as well as the duelist himself and his deck, make victory meaningful. In the English version, he is also somewhat more harsh than his Japanese counterpart.
When Syrus was younger, he almost used the card Power Bond without thinking during a duel. He was stopped by Zane who revealed that if he used it, he would have lost the duel at the end of his turn because of the card's drawback. Paying off Syrus' opponent to end the duel, Zane sealed the card, stating that his brother could only use it when he was truly ready. Syrus, believing himself to be a disgrace to his older brother, did not unseal the card until much later after his friend Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki) faced off against Zane.
Zane was selected by Camula, the second member of the Shadow Riders (Seven Stars), as a victim of her shadow duel. Though he easily overpowered her, the vampire forced him into an intentional loss by offering his brother's soul as payment for her Illusion Gate card. As a result, he was turned into a doll for a short period of time, before Jaden managed to defeat Camula. He later faces Jaden in a rematch, choosing him as his opponent for his ceremonial graduation duel. The duel ends in a tie after Zane and Jaden use a variety of cards to raise their monsters' attack strengths to astronomical levels, but ended up taking damage equal to both monsters' attack points. Zane goes on to compete in Duel Pro League after his graduation.
A fan favorite in the Pro League, he suffers his first true loss at the hands of Aster Phoenix (Ed Phoenix), who continuously tells him that his defeat is "predetermined by destiny." The duel that the two engage in marks the first time Zane takes damage from Power Bond. The battle takes its toll; from then on, Zane finds himself trapped perpetually in a losing streak. He is approached by Mr. Shroud (Monkey Saruyama), a promoter who offers him the chance to redeem himself, and although reluctant at first, Zane ultimately accepts.
Zane is soon pitted against Mad Dog (Inukai) in the "Underground Duel," a competition in front of a shady audience wherein both contestants are sealed inside a cage and forced to wear electrodes ("Shock-Amplifying Devices") that shock them each time Life Points are depleted. Zane again finds himself on the losing end, but realizes that his former philosophy of respecting the opponent above the desire to win is flawed. Frustrated and desperate, he resorts to cruelty and aggression and summons Chimeratech Overdragon, which practically destroys the dueling ring. As the smoke clears, Shroud is amazed (he calls Ryo a "monster" in the Japanese version). The next time Zane is seen, he proves his strength to the dueling world once more. He has donned a dark outfit, and is referred to by the public as "Hell Kaiser Ryo" (ヘルカイザー亮 Heru Kaizā Ryō) in the Japanese version.
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
In episode 83, Zane travels into the mountains after casting off his promoter to confront Sheppard (Samejima) in the dojo where he was brought up dueling, hoping to acquire the forbidden Cyber-Style Tails (サイバー流裏 Saibā Ryū Ura) deck that existed opposite of his own Cyber Dragon deck. Though Sheppard manages to keep Zane at bay with his Cyber Ogre and various methods of manipulating his opponent's monsters, he is defeated by his own Cyber Ogre 2 when Zane betrays his respect for Cyber End Dragon. Zane takes his prize, but Sheppard believes that he will regain the respect he once held for others during the Genex tournament, and thus gives him a medal that will allow him to participate.
Shortly thereafter, Atticus Rhodes duels Zane under the impression that his friend has fallen to the dark side, much like himself when he was taken in by the Shadow Riders, using the deck of Nightshroud (Darkness) to symbolize his belief that, just as he was able to break free from the darkness that had corrupted him, so too could Zane. Using his new deck, Zane easily dispatches his opponent, causing the dark power of Nightshroud to once again envelop Atticus as he loses faith in his friend's salvation. Zane, however, tells him upon his defeat that there is no darkness in his heart, and that his only wish is to achieve victory through unrelenting force and the accumulation of power. In turn, the monster that others perceive him to have become has merely been born of his inability to cope with failure.
In episode 95, Zane approaches Aster for a second duel, but Syrus intervenes and demands to be his opponent instead. Similar to his previous duel with Inukai, both players wear electrodes, subject to intense physical punishment (in the Japanese version, this competition is referred to as the "Hell Duel"). It becomes clear that, in his current mindset, Zane spares no one; he is cold, ruthless, and abusive, regardless of who his opponents are, and enjoys seeing others suffer. Despite Syrus' efforts to defeat his brother, Zane trounces him by returning his Cyberdark Dragon back to its three original fusion components. He then makes his exit, stating that if there is anything he respects at all anymore, it is only victory itself. He appears again in episode 102 following a brief run-in with the disguised Blair Flannigan (Rei Saotome), giving her his tournament medal as he is no longer interested in participating, and leaves Duel Academy island.
Spoilers end here.

Card list
During the first year, Zane plays a Cyber Dragon deck, representing yang, the active and bright force in the universe. After visiting Sheppard in the mountains during the second year, he took the Ura deck, representing the dark and passive yin, that was sealed away in his former teacher's dojo. He combined cards from both decks into a single deck, but continued to disrespect his Cyber Dragons, throwing away all related cards into his graveyard to strengthen his new servants, living mechanisms of torture known as the Cyberdarks (Cyber Darks; サイバー・ダーク Saibā Dāku). The design of cards in the Cyber Dragon and Cyberdark series has links to Chinese mythology.

Alexis Rhodes

Alexis Rhodes, known in Japan as Asuka Tenjouin (天上院明日香, Tenjōin Asuka?), is a fictional character in the anime series Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX in Japan) and the manga series of the same name. Her family name has been written as "Tenjoin," "Tenjouin," and "Tenjyoin" in Roman characters. Her given name in the Japanese version means "Tomorrow's Fragrance."

Character
15-year old Alexis Rhodes is a strong female duelist from the Obelisk Blue dormitory at Duel Academy (Duel Academia). Alexis, along with Zane Truesdale (Ryo Marufuji) and Chazz Princeton (Jun Manjoume), is one of the top students at the Academy. She is regarded as the "madonna" of Obelisk Blue, yet she does not follow the crowd nor does she regard herself as better than other people.
Many fans believe that Alexis has a crush on Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki). This is more true of the English version - in the original, Asuka does not entertain romantic interest towards anyone, which leads to her brother's repeated attempts to get her to notice someone. The notion is furthered when Jaden and Syrus Truesdale (Sho Marufuji) duel the Paradox Brothers (Meikyū Brothers in the English manga and Japanese version). Alexis tells Bastion Misawa (Daichi Misawa) that she "is happy that Jaden gets to stay at the Academy." Bastion corrects her by assuming that she meant Jaden and Syrus, and presumably figures out that Alexis has a crush on Jaden when Alexis tries to change the subject. A similar situation also ensues when Mindy (Momoe Hamaguchi), Alexis' good friend and roomate, exclaims that she would never let a Slifer stay on campus. In episode 15, things take a turn when Harrington Rosewood (Mitsuru Ayanokouji) challenges Jaden to a duel with the prize of being Alexis' fiancé. Despite Jaden winning the duel, his naivetë allows Alexis to downplay the role to one of friendship in the English version; in the Japanese version, Asuka instead calls Judai an idiot for not knowing the definition of the word "fiancé" at all.
Alexis mourns for her long-lost older brother, Atticus Rhodes (Fubuki Tenjouin). With the help of Zane, she constantly searches for clues surrounding his disappearance, until it is revealed that he joined the Shadow Riders (Seven Stars), under the control of Nightshroud (Darkness). Defeated by Jaden in a shadow duel and relieved of this persona, the incident leaves Atticus amnesic, prompting his sister to engage in a duel with Titan to restore his memories. Ultimately, Alexis is victorious and successful in achieving her goal.
Later in the series, Chazz comes out about his infatuation with Alexis after Jaden defeats the final Shadow Rider. Atticus helps Chazz with his crush and he steals all seven spirit keys in order to force Alexis to duel with him. Although Chazz plays suggestive cards such as Hidden Wish and Love Letter to show her how much he cares, Alexis wins in the end, stating that she cannot return his feelings, because she "loves dueling." Chazz's crush on Alexis continues throughout the series, although after having his free will is sapped by Sartorius (Takuma Saiou), his interests fade, until he is rescued by Jaden and returned to his former self.
Following Chazz's entrance into the Society of Light, Alexis duels with him to keep him from taking over Obelisk Blue completely. She fails, however, and meets the same fate as her fellow elites, though she retains her pride as an Obelisk Blue duelist, refusing to play the White Veil card given to her by Sartorius in her duel against Sommelier Parker during the Genex tournament.
In episode 93, Sartorius names Alexis his "Apostle of Light" (光の使徒 Hikari no Shito), stripping her of her free will and rendering her cold and heartless. Providing her with a new White Night (白夜 Byakuya) deck, he orders her to retrieve the key to the laser satellite, Sora, which his good personality entrusted to Jaden. She is defeated an episode later, and thus freed from Sartorius' influence.

Card list
Alexis plays a Cyber Girl deck. Her tactics are well-balanced due to the variety of different effects her monsters possess, ranging from direct attacks to negation of oppossing card abilities. She is also skilled at concentrating on a single tactic while dueling, devoting all her cards to the summoning and strengthening of her fused warrior Cyber Blader, or her Cyber Angel ritual series. (Note: In the Japanese version, the names of the Cyber Angels are hyphenated on both sides).

Chumley Huffington

Chumley Huffington, known in Japan as Hayato Maeda (前田隼人, Maeda Hayato?), is a fictional character in the anime series Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX in Japan).

Character
16-year old Chumley Huffington is a duelist of Slifer Red (Osiris Red) that has a face that resembles that of a koala. He was forced to retake his freshman year after he failed his first time around. His best friends, Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki) and Syrus Truesdale (Sho Marufuji), come to Duel Academy (Duel Academia), and encourage Chumley to gain more confidence in himself.
Throughout the series, Chumley participates in only two duels: the first against his father, Mr. Huffington (Kumazo Maeda), and the second against Vellian Crowler (Cronos de Medici). His father believed that his son's efforts at Duel Academy were worthless and that he would be better off leaving. To put an end to the conflict, Chumley struggled valiantly against his father's special tactics, but ultimately lost. Despite this, he allowed his son to continue his studies, as he saw that Chumley had actually learned something, and that his friends would always support him.
Maximillion Pegasus (Pegasus J. Crawford) offers Chumley a job at Industrial Illusions as a card designer nearing the end of the first year. In order to determine whether or not he will be permitted to leave the school, Crowler duels with him in one final test. Although Chumley manages to hold his own, even getting the chance to play the first card of his own creation, Ayers Rock Sunrise, he is again defeated. Crowler, however, lets him move on regardless, impressed by how far in his studies he has come.
Chumley returns with Pegasus during the Genex tournament to give Jaden a new card, Skyscraper 2 - Hero City, to aid him in his duel with Frantz, a fellow card designer who stole the only remaining copy of The Winged Dragon of Ra from Industrial Illusions.
In the original version of the series, Chumley has the same power to hear and see Duel Spirits that Chazz (Jun Manjoume) and Jaden have, although he is not totally aware of it. While Des Koala is pictured with him several times in as his spirit partner, this information is omitted entirely in the English version.

Card list
Chumley plays a Koala deck, and with this naturally comes an Australian theme.

Chazz Princeton

Chazz Princeton, known in Japan as Jun Manjoume (万丈目準, Manjōme Jun?), is a fictional character in the anime series Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX in Japan) and the manga series of the same name.

Character
15-year old Chazz Princeton is a duelist of the Obelisk Blue dormitory at Duel Academy (Duel Academia). He is the leader of Team Elite, until his defeat at the hands of Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki). At first a peerless duelist, believing himself to be the most elite duelist in the school, Chazz is selfish and arrogant. He is the youngest of three brothers, with his siblings Slade Princeton (Chosaku Manjoume) and Jagger Princeton (Shoji Manjoume) heads of the political and financial worlds, respectively. Due to this fact, Chazz is pressured into becoming the head of the dueling world to ensure the superiority of the Princeton family name ("Manjoume Group" in the Japanese version) worldwide.
Despite having access to rare cards provided by Vellian Crowler (Cronos de Medici), Chazz is defeated by Jaden early on in the first year. He is then overwhelmed by Bastion Misawa (Daichi Misawa), and eventually became so dispirited and confused from his losses that he left Duel Academy to enter North Academy (North School). There, he defeated the top duelists and becomes the "king" of the school.
It is at this time that he gains the catch phrase "Chazz it up," while in the original version of the series it is "一、十、百、千、万丈目サンダー" (ichi, jū, hyaku, sen, Manjōme-sandā), which serves as a pun given that the "Man" portion of his surname is the symbol for the number ten-thousand, and is preceded by the numbers one (ichi), ten (jū), hundred (hyaku), and thousand (sen). In the latter case, he also acquires the moniker "Manjoume Thunder" (万丈目サンダー Manjōme Sandā). Due to his insistence that he be addressed respectfully, he often finds himself correcting others who merely call him "Manjoume" by saying "Manjoume-san da!" ("It's Manjoume-san!"; "-san" being a Japanese honorific). The students of North School, however, mistook the title as "Manjoume Thunder" ("sandā" being a Japanese pronunciation of the word "thunder"), and the name stuck upon his return to Duel Academia. In the English version, he often refers to himself in the third person as "The Chazz."
Acting as North Academy's representative duelist, he was defeated again by Jaden, but realized the errors of his ways and was finally able to take charge of his own life. He was welcomed back to Duel Academy, but forced to restart his studies out of the Slifer Red (Osiris Red) dormitory. From the ordeal, Chazz obtains a spirit partner in the form of Ojama Yellow, who Chazz finds annoying.
Due to his dueling skills, Chazz is chosen as one of the seven keykeepers charged with keeping the Shadow Riders (Seven Stars) from reviving the Sacred Beast Cards (Three Phantom Demons), and later faces Slade in a duel to determine ownership of Duel Academy. In the chain of events leading up to the duel, Chazz finds Ojama Black and Ojama Green, both of which join Ojama Yellow as his spirit partners. During this time, his feelings for Alexis Rhodes (Asuka Tenjouin) also become common knowledge; he constantly chases after her, love-struck, despite her protests. In the original version of the series, Manjoume even goes as far as to address her brother Fubuki as "onii-san," treating him as though he were his brother-in-law.
During the second year, Chazz duels Sartorius (Takuma Saiou) for the opportunity to rise to the Pro League, but loses. As a result, he joins the Society of Light, acting as Sartorius' means of converting the top students of Obelisk Blue and Ra Yellow. In the Japanese version, his nickname becomes "White Thunder" (ホワイトサンダー Howaito Sandā) from that point on until his defeat in episode 88.
After seeing Chazz's ruthlessness with the new White Knight (白騎士団 Shirokishi-dan) deck given to him by Sartorius, Jaden duels him with the cards that he himself once used: the Ojama Trio. During the match, Jaden shows Chazz his old black uniform, and Chazz eventually regains his senses, tearing off his white coat to don his signature black one once more. Chazz, back to his old self, retrieves the Ojama Trio to destroy White Knight's Lord, the card representing Sartorius' evil, but in doing so, willingly loses the duel to an effect of White Knight's Lord. Again in the Japanese version, following the battle, he dons his former outfit, revived as "Black Thunder" (ブラックサンダー Burakku Sandā), though others continue calling him by his first nickname in the series.
In episode 102, Chazz, with the assistance of the remaining Obelisk Blue students, takes on the Society of Light's members to make amends. They successfully return most of them to their former selves, releasing Duel Academy from the Society's grip, but before Chazz is declared champion of the Genex tournament, he is challenged by Blair Flannigan (Rei Saotome), who had come back to Duel Academy in hopes of officially entering Slifer Red. He defeats her, and is therefore allowed to return to Obelisk Blue, but ultimately finds himself back at Slifer Red because of the little respect he receives.
Shortly after the beginning of the third year, Chazz, irked by the superiority and secrecy of the Garam family, forces Amon Garam into a Dis-Duel wherein the participants are suspended from helicopters. Although he puts all his strength into attaining victory, he is knocked off his dueling platform and into the lake with his opponent's final strike.

Card list
Chazz originally played a Chthonian (Hell) deck, but after being given a number of rare cards by Crowler, he runs VtoZ deck. Losing all his cards while stranded, he enters North Academy with a deck of cards he had found on the grounds around the school, focusing on a "One Turn Kill" strategy. During a school duel against Jaden, he is given North Academy's prized Armed Dragon cards, and against his brother Slade, he uses a deck with monsters with 0 attack points (originally meant to be 500 points). In the second year, his deck is powered up after receiving Beetron (abbreviated as "B・" in the Japanese version) cards from Sartorius, and gradually evolves to reflect his deepening obsession with the White thematic.
Ultimately, however, Chazz will often bring together elements from all his previous decks when dueling, with the Ojama Trio as his trump cards.

Jaden Yuki

Jaden Yuki, known in Japan as Judai Yuki (遊城十代, Yūki Jūdai?), is a fictional character and protagonist in the anime series Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX in Japan) and the manga series of the same name. His name is meant to be a pun in Japanese, as "jūdai" is the word for "teenager."

Character
15-year old Jaden Yuki, intending to attend Duel Academy (Duel Academia), bumps into Yugi Mutou on his way to the school's entrance examinations at the beginning of the series. He is given a Winged Kuriboh card by the legendary duelist, but receives a low score on the exam's written component, and is therefore placed in Slifer Red (Osiris Red), the lowest ranked dormitory, alongside Syrus Truesdale (Sho Marufuji) and Chumley Huffington (Hayato Maeda), who become his new friends. Despite a lack of academic skill, Jaden is a very talented duelist and has good instincts. He was once granted entrance into Ra Yellow, but declined the offer as he preferred the "burning fiery spirit and hot passion of red."
As most of his leisure time is consumed by dueling, Jaden neither thinks much about nor has a great deal of time for a love life. He has not displayed obvious romantic affection for any character in the series; however, it is suspected by many fans that Alexis Rhodes (Asuka Tenjouin) harbors feelings for him (this is more true in the English version - in the original, while Asuka does show interest in Judai as a person, her attentions are far less of a romantic nature than in the dub). Blair Flannigan (Rei Saotome), who disguised herself as a boy to get closer to Zane Truesdale (Ryo Marufuji), also developed a crush on the young duelist.
Jaden has made several enemies at his school, including Vellian Crowler (Cronos de Medici), whom Jaden defeated in his examination duel. Out of spite, Crowler tried to kick Jaden out of school on many different occasions before finally beginning to respect him. Despite his carefree attitude, Jaden is an accomplished duelist, as he defeated aforementioned Crowler during his examination duel, Chazz Princeton (Jun Manjoume) in a school-wide duel, and Bastion Misawa (Daichi Misawa) for the representative position. He is also responsible for the defeat of most of the Shadow Riders (Seven Stars), and goes on to pummel a slew of other opponents.
During the second year, Jaden ventured into Neo Space after being defeated in his second duel with Aster Phoenix (Ed Phoenix). There, he learned of the ongoing battle between the forces of darkness and light. With the help of the Neo-Spacians (Neo Spacians; ネオ・スペーシアン Neo Supēshan), Jaden adopts the role of the universe's defender wielding the "darkness of justice" against Sartorius (Takuma Saiou) and the Society of Light. The task of rescuing most of his converted friends from the organization's clutches also falls on him.
In episode 93, to prevent his evil side from activating the laser satellite, Sora, Sartorius entrusts Jaden with one of the keys to its control switch. The diviner's evil personality sends numerous duelists after the boy to win it back, but to no avail. He ultimately confronts Jaden himself in episode 102, demanding the key in exchange for Aster, from whom he had already regained the other key in battle. Jaden agrees, and although Aster is rescued shortly thereafter, both keys are put into the possession of Prince Orgene, who goes on to fire the satellite. Sora, however, is destroyed during the course of their duel. Sartorius is then defeated, the Light of Ruin purged from his body, and the universe saved from destruction.

Card list
During the first year, Jaden plays a Hero deck composed almost entirely of Elemental Heroes (abbreviated as "E・Hero" in the Japanese version), Spell and Trap cards that support them, as well as his "partner" Winged Kuriboh. Jaden is often referred to as "the duelist who can create miracles" because of his ability to make incredible turnabouts. The design of cards in the Elemental Hero series is of American comic book origin, while the design of cards in the Neo-Spacian series is of Japanese origin.
Jaden's strategy is based on the various Fusions that are created through combinations of the Elemental Hero cards. As the series progress, it is revealed that every Elemental Hero has a fusion of some sort with another, giving the card Polymerization premier importance in Jaden's deck. The majority of his other cards supplement his Elemental Hero monsters, such as the Field Spell, Skyscraper, and these cards have allowed Jaden to emerge victorious even in dire situations.
After his second duel with Aster, Jaden's entire deck is left blank to his eyes due to Sartorius' powers. With the inability to use his old Hero deck, Jaden received a new one that included some cards he created as a child for a KaibaCorp contest. Once his ability to see his older cards returned, he combined elements from both decks into a single deck, his Neos deck.
In episode 87, Jaden, under the guidance of Banner's (Daitokuji) disembodied spirit, retrieves the three Ojama cards that Chazz threw out over the ocean. He adds them to his deck, with the addition of some of their support cards, in hopes of returning him to his original self. Similarly, in episode 93, to remind Alexis of her former self, Atticus (Fubuki) and Chazz both give Jaden cards for his deck, The Swing of Fond Memories and Ojama Black.

Syrus Truesdale

Syrus Truesdale, known in Japan as Sho Marufuji (丸藤翔, Marufuji Shō?), is a fictional character in the anime series Yu-Gi-Oh GX (Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters GX in Japan) and the manga series of the same name.

Character
15-year old Syrus Truesdale is the weaker younger brother of Zane Truesdale (Ryo Marufuji) who attends Duel Academy (Duel Academia), residing in the Slifer Red (Osiris Red) dormitory along with Chumley Huffington (Hayato Maeda) and Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki). He is a decent duelist, but has a great deal of self doubt, hindering his performance. He also has a crush on Dark Magician Girl (Black Magician Girl). In the original version of the series, he ends the majority of his sentences with "ssu" (an elision of "desu"). Furthermore, he calls Judai "Aniki," meaning "big brother," while referring to him as "Bro" in the English-language manga.
Syrus has made progress as a duelist throughout the series. From the onset, he faces Jaden in preparation for a tag duel, but, priding himself on finding a way to outdo his roommate, overlooks the abilities of his own cards. It was for this same reason that Zane forbade him from using the Power Bond card, for Syrus was unable to cope with its potential drawback. In the subsequent duel with the Paradox Brothers (Meikyū Brothers in the English manga and Japanese version), Syrus fell for every single ploy the brothers set. Praised by Jaden, he regains his wits, and manages to destroy their opponents' Gate Guardian with a clever combination play. He even brings up the courage to activate Power Bond, which allows the two of them to attack with UFOroid Fighter for the win.
During the second season, Syrus is given an opportunity to advance to Ra Yellow should he be able to defeat Missy (Ran Kochou). Feeling that he should not shoulder his brother's legacy, Syrus gives his Power Bond card to Chazz Princeton (Jun Manjoume) before the start of the duel (reclaims it afterwards). While he accomplishes an early lead with a direct attack from his Steamroid, Syrus is baffled when his opponent recovers by playing Insect Garden, which puts her weaker Insect monsters on Syrus' side of the field as targets for her Insect Princess. Fending off strikes with Submarineroid, Syrus sets up his arsenal for a Fusion Summon. He activates Vehicroid Connection Zone, calling forth Super Vehicroid - Jumbo Drill to destroy Missy's defense-position Insect Princess, and trample the rest of her Life Points away.
In episode 55, Syrus develops a rivalry with Tyranno Hassleberry (Tyranno Kenzan) over which of the two is better suited to being Jaden's best friend (in the Japanese version, it is over who has the right to call him "big brother"). They constantly argue and fight, prompting their repetitive separation by Alexis Rhodes (Asuka Tenjouin). By episode 64, their rivlary comes to a temporary halt, when the two duel to settle matters once and for all. Tyranno inflicts heavy damage to Syrus' Life Points with his dinosaurs, but Syrus prepares an elaborate combination of cards that lock down his opponent in an infinite loop. Tyranno's Ultimate Tyranno constantly attacks Syrus' Decoyroid, which is revived over and over again through various methods, causing Cyber Summon Blaster to wear down Tyranno little by little. Before the last blow is dealt, Tyranno discovers that Syrus went without food or sleep to search for Jaden, who had gone missing since his defeat at the hands of Aster Phoenix (Ed Phoenix). Seeing Syrus' devotion to their friend, he chose not to activate his Jurassic Impact card, which would have wiped both players out simultaneously.
During the field trip to Domino City, Syrus teams up with Tyranno in a duel against the first duo of the Light Brigade, Frost (Kourimaru) and Thunder (Ikazuchimaru). Although the two are pinned down by their opponents, who tuned their decks specifically to combat their cards, they end up pooling their efforts to combine their monsters into Super Vehicroid - Rex Union1. Despite their teamwork, however, Frost ends the duel by wiping out all players but himself, and promptly drags them to his master's lair, from where they are transported to KaibaLand as bait for Jaden and Aster by order of Sarina (Mizuchi Saiou).
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
As he observes his brother's actions following his "rebirth," Syrus notes Zane's newfound disrespect for his own cards and opponents. He dismisses the barbaric persona, refusing to believe that his brother has sunk so low. Determined to bring his brother back to his senses, Syrus acknowledges the inevitability that the two of them will face one another. During the Genex tournament, Syrus and Zane do duel, and they are hooked up to electrodes, just as Zane and Mad Dog (Inukai) were in the Underground Duel. Despite his best efforts and Jaden's secret move to place Power Bond back into his deck, Syrus loses, but he does not give up in hoping that his brother can be returned to his former self.
Shortly after the beginning of the third year at Duel Academy, Syrus advances to Obelisk Blue. As a result of Dis-Duels being called for by Professor Cobra, Syrus becomes self-conscious of his worthiness to wear the outfit of the elites, and sets out to prove himself. In the Japanese version, he also wishes to adopt his brother's discarded title, and thus merit the name of "
Kaiser Sho" (カイザー翔 Kaizā Shō). Inspired by Jaden's match with Austin O'Brien, however, he decides to remain in Ra Yellow, and sets aside his goal for the future.

Card list
Syrus plays a Vehicroid deck, composed of cartoon-like versions of real vehicles. Syrus' Vehicroids are generally lacking in terms of martial strength, but he supplements them through other cards and often combines them to form stronger cards. In addition, his Vehicroids have the benefit of possessing abilities that cover most strategic maneuvers.
